Living together before marriage vs. waiting until marriage to move

The apartment keys looked tiny. Funny how something so small could carry such a huge question.
My friend smiled, held them up, and said, "We're moving in together." Half the group cheered. The other half went completely silent.
One side saw freedom. Why wait? Living together meant learning the real version of someone. The messy mornings. The late-night arguments. The grocery lists. The unpaid bills. Better to discover all that before making a lifelong promise, right?
But the other side wasn't convinced.
They believed some things become more meaningful when they're saved. Waiting until marriage wasn't about being old-fashioned. It was about commitment coming first. About building a home after making a promise instead of hoping the promise would come later. They wondered if moving in early made it easier to walk away when life got hard.
The conversation got deeper than anyone expected.
Nobody was really arguing about rent or furniture. They were talking about trust. About timing. About what love is supposed to look like.
The truth? Neither choice magically guarantees a happy ending.
Some couples move in before marriage and build incredible relationships. Others realize they're completely different people. Some wait until marriage and grow stronger together. Others discover challenges they never saw coming.
Maybe the real question isn't when you share an address.
Maybe it's whether you've learned to communicate, respect each other, handle conflict, and grow as a team before life starts testing you.
Because a home isn't built by moving boxes. It's built by the people carrying them.
So... if you had the keys in your hand today, what would you choose—and why? I'd love to hear your take.
